Mars aspecting Pluto brings the desire/action function (symbolized by Mars) in contact with the function that precipitates transformation through crisis (symbolized by Pluto). While the Plutonian function can be disruptive and challenging to your ability to fulfill desires and take action, there is also a commonality of energy shared by Mars and Pluto (Mars originally Scorpio’s ruler and Mars and Pluto were deemed co-rulers of Scorpio, traditionally). Both planets are associated with force, power and sexuality. In many respects, Pluto can be seen as the octave of Mars.
Pluto’s amplification of the Mars energy can be manifested either as a more intense expression of force, power and sexuality or as the transformation and elevation of these attributes as they merge toward their Source. Particularly if the Pluto function manifests as a pull toward transformation, the psyche is likely to experience conflict between the personal psyche (associated with Mars, as an inner planet) and the transpersonal dimension (associated with Pluto, as an outer planet). Because of this, and because when the ego resists the transformational pull the Mars-Pluto energy tends to manifest at a low level of consciousness, Mars-Pluto contacts are generally regarded as being negative. However, positive expressions of that energy are possible, even when the Pluto function is being non-transformational.
The positive, non-transformational manifestations of Mars-Pluto occur when the Plutonian energy is channeled, non-destructively, to enhance the desire/action function. Your desires may be given a more intense motivation. Your actions and assertiveness may be imbued with more power. The experience of sexuality may be intensified. It is a slippery slope, however, for these positive manifestations of Mars-Pluto to become destructive and negative. It only takes the ego becoming unbalanced or selfish for you to abuse force, power and sexuality and for obsession and the will to dominate to take control. Because the Plutonian function also acts through the subconscious, the powerful dynamics of Mars-Pluto can easily turn on you, as well.
A Mars-Pluto contact suggests that the Plutonian transformational energy will act upon your desires and mode of action. The Plutonian function achieves transformation by bringing the psyche into a state of crisis, from which the only real resolution is transformational. Such a crisis is typically precipitated through a polarization of the psyche, generally into a negative and a positive camp. This separation allows the psyche to confront these negative tendencies and attributes (which brings about crisis) and, ideally, to purge these negative elements from the psyche. There is often a period of conflict associated with the confrontation. This conflict may be internal and/or external in nature.
Thus, a Mars-Pluto contact will usually signify the attempt, often subconscious, to rid the psyche of negative desires and modes of action. This attempt is not always successful—in fact, it is not completely successful in the majority of cases. Lack of success may entail suppressed negativity, reactive negativity and/or the repetition of crises involving your desires and actions. The successful resolution of the crisis brings transformation and inner growth, together with a purification of your desires and mode of action.
Mars also symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype). A Mars-Pluto contact suggests that your masculinity is related to power, sexuality, intimacy and/or a desire for authenticity. The positive or the negative characteristics associated with Pluto are likely to be manifested through your animus. A Mars-Pluto aspect also suggests that you have the opportunity to transform your animus by facing and resolving psychological crises and purging your animus of latent negativity.
The dynamic symbolized by the conjunction of Mars and Pluto may express itself through the interaction of the energies symbolized by Mars and Pluto or through the transformative function symbolized by Pluto. However, if the conjunction manifests at the level of energy interaction, this is only a preface to a potential transformative stage. At the level of energy interaction, the active, manifesting energy symbolized by Mars is forced to interact closely with the retentive and intense energy symbolized by Pluto. The result is often powerfully explosive.
The assertive, active energy associated with Mars is held in and contained by the retentive energy associated with Pluto. This retention of energy, however, allows the force behind it to build up, so that it becomes more powerful. The question is, when it is released, does the energy explode forth destructively or is it released in a more controlled manner with its power channeled so that you are able to effectively apply your energy with the force and power necessary to accomplish your goal? Both are possible and which occurs will be determined, to some extent, by the degree of consciousness you possess regarding your desires and mode of action and by the extent to which you can discipline yourself to proceed toward your goal with conscious resolve. Your ability to direct power toward some external goal can also result from a transformation of your desire/action function.
The relative strength of the Plutonian energy within your psyche also affects the how the Mars-Pluto conjunction manifests in your personality and psyche. If the retentive power symbolized by Pluto overcomes the assertive energy symbolized by Mars, your actions and desires are likely to be inhibited or suppressed. If this is the case, then the chances are greater that you will periodically engage in explosive outpourings of your emotions. The violence and irrationality of such outpourings are likely to be intensified by your frustration over your unfulfilled desires and your inability to assert your will.
Another manifestation of the interplay between the energies symbolized by Mars and Pluto may be that your action/desire function is turned inward toward the Source of power. Such an inclination can result in your actions being intuitively and insightfully guided. It is also the basis for you undergoing a positive transformation of your action/desire function. Though the result your conscious or unconscious inclination toward the inner Power is likely to be positive, your experience of the transformative and purifying energies associated with Pluto may be difficult.
The Plutonian function involves uprooting and eliminating outmoded psychological patterns and self-destructive complexes. In order to do this, you often must confront your "dark side" before these complexes can be dispelled. Frequently, these complexes are brought to light through a polarizing process that gives rise to conflict and crisis.
The desire function is often a seat of such negative complexes and Mars conjunct Pluto frequently suggests that you may experience an "attack" of the purifying energies associated with Pluto on your desire body. As latent desires come to the surface of your consciousness, you may not immediately recognize them as being negative and so, in order for you to confront the dark side of your desires, you may have to play them out, often in a compulsive manner.
Another manifestation of the Mars-Pluto conjunction is that you may seem to be in a perpetual state of crisis. These crises are usually caused by your inappropriate actions and arise in order to bring your negative behavior patterns to light. Your subconscious is trying to deal with these negative behavior or mental complexes through such crises, which may or may not be successful in bringing things to a head so that you can confront your negativity and heal the inner conflict that is producing that negativity.
A great deal of power is involved in the transformative process. Sometimes you focus your attention on this power. Although this is a displacement of the real work associated with Mars conjunct Pluto, your focus on power is often rewarding for your ego. You may pursue power and use it assertively. Your actions then appear powerful to others. If your fate does not confer legitimate power on you, you may resort to manipulation, or become fixated on control. However, since you are likely to experience a crisis-laden environment—one which seems beyond your control—your obsession with control often results in you become frustrated.
The ultimate goal of the Plutonian function is to regain the Pure Source. If you cooperate in the process of self-transformation through purification, then the Mars-Pluto conjunction symbolizes your desire to do inner work and your striving toward the goal of self-purification. In the process, your desires and mode of action are transformed. You become more aware of the consequences of your desires and actions and the need for self-disciplined control.
Mars also symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype or male sexuality). If you are male, Mars conjunct Pluto may signify your experiencing (sometimes frequent) crises of masculinity. These crises represent the call of your subconscious to transform your concept of masculinity, breaking down old and outmoded stereotypes and constructing an animus that is authentic. However, if you do not respond to this push toward transformation, the powerful forces symbolized by Pluto are likely to manifest in other ways. You may exhibit an extremely powerful and intense male ego. The subconscious energy may also express itself in intense (and sometimes violent) sexuality. While it may be possible for your ego to control or sublimate these the force of your animus so that a strong and powerful, but positive, animus is projected, if you do not consciously work on how you project your masculinity, it can easily express itself with much negativity.
If you are female, Mars conjunct Pluto may suggest that you are attracted to men who exhibit one of the Plutonian characteristics: power, violence, extreme sexuality or positive transformation, depending on the level of your own consciousness. Mars conjunct Pluto may also symbolize your urge to explore your animus at the psychological level. Entering your subconscious and engaging your animus can unleash powerful energies that can transform your psyche and bring you access to positive power and energy.
You can realize the transcendent potential of Mars conjunct Pluto by focusing on the inner work of purifying and transforming your desire complex. This has a concomitant effect on your motivations and actions. Your desires and actions are turned toward the spiritual. You engage in intense efforts to unite with the Source of Being. This deep devotional focus transforms your life into a quest for inner purification. Your unrelenting pursuit of truth and your constant yearning for transformation and union with the Source of Being results in a continual reexamination and reconstruction of your desire complex. Your actions follow your desires, so that they, too, become pure and motivated only by your attractions for the Source of All Being.
Your efforts to unite with the Divine within you may not be easy. If fact, in order for your desires to become purified, your heart may become a crucible where you must confront and reject your negative tendencies. You are called upon to display great courage, passing warrior-like through the flames of Divine Love.
If you are inwardly insecure, you will resist the pressure to transform your desire complex and actions, because this would expose your ego to its own failings and ultimate inconsequence. You remain blind to the Truth and the suppressed pull toward transformation instead manifests in constant crises. You may feel that dark forces are confronting you or that powerful enemies who will not allow you to attain your desires are oppressing you. These forces, however, are only the manifestations of your subconscious that are opposing those dark desires that you harbor but will not admit.
In response to your insecurities and/or to those perceived forces that are standing in your way, you develop an intense and inappropriate desire for power and for the trappings of power--violence and sexuality. In order to protect yourself and/or validate your desires, you seek to become powerful—more powerful than anyone else. You may or may not be successful at acquiring the power that your seek. However, whether you actually become powerful or not, your desires and actions will be consumed by your obsession.
The personality may also express undertones of Mars-in-Scorpio or Mars in the eighth house.
Mars conjunct Pluto is often accompanied by a Mars sextile to Neptune (see Mars sextile Neptune).-- Gargatholil Back to Top
Mars sextile Pluto symbolizes the opportunity for the transformative and purifying energies of Pluto to act on your action/desire function. The Plutonian function involves uprooting and eliminating outmoded psychological patterns and self-destructive complexes. In order to do this, "dark side" elements must be confronted before they can be dispelled. Frequently, these complexes are brought to light through a polarization process which gives rise to conflict and crisis. The desire function is a seat of such negative complexes, and Mars sextile Pluto suggests that you have opportunities, particularly by taking advantage of the energy released in crisis situations, to identify and jettison your negative desires and patterns of negative action.
You are likely to have a predisposition toward transformative growth. Mars sextile Pluto points to your growth and transformative energies being focused on your desire complex and on the behavior patterns that stem from these desires. Usually, this aspect is combined with a Neptune-Mars contact (either the conjunction or the trine). Thus, crisis-induced transformation will generally be accompanied by or be accomplished through the refinement and transcendence of your desires and actions.
The Mars-Pluto sextile also may symbolize opportunities for those qualities symbolized by Pluto—particularly power and sexuality--to be utilized by you or associated by you with your desires and actions. This may be a part of the transformative process or it may be your defense against the transformative process. If the qualities associated with Pluto are used by you to aid in the transformation of your desires and actions, you will be able to take advantage of an inner power and strength that will propel you to take courageous action at the spiritual level to purge your desire nature and refine the quality of your actions. You can then avail yourself of a connection to an inner Radiance that will purify and pull you up to higher levels of consciousness.
Mars also symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype or male sexuality). If you are male, the Mars-Pluto sextile suggests that you have opportunities to express your masculinity with power and intensity. You may be able to tap into qualities of magnetism or mystery when projecting your animus. If you are a woman, the sextile may symbolize opportunities for you to form relationships with men exhibiting a Plutonian character. Whether male or female, the Mars-Pluto sextile suggests that you have the capacity to get in touch with your animus at a deep psychological level. When you engage your animus, you have the ability to transform it, often by confronting its shadow side, acknowledging your shadow and freeing yourself from its control.
If either Mars or Pluto has a difficult aspect from another planet, the sextile suggests that you have opportunities to relieve the stress that is associated with the difficult aspect. When stress is caused by some problem of action or unfulfilled desires (when the difficult aspect is to Mars), you can often resolve the problem through honest insight by engaging the situation with integrity. Realizing your ability to empower your actions can also be helpful in resolving the situation. The Pluto sextile also suggests, however, that you may resort to force and abusing your power in order to cope with a stressful situation.
Taking action or focusing your desires is often the solution when the difficult aspect is to Pluto. This may be particularly fruitful when you can take action to confront a Plutonian crisis and move the crisis to its next stage of development toward the ultimate purging of your negative tendencies. Honestly taking stock of your desires and then acting on them can help you to end a cycle of negativity and positively empower you, especially if you are caught in a feeling of helplessness.
You can realize the transcendent potential of Mars sextile Pluto when you take the opportunity that is presented to you in this life to transform your desire nature and the basis of your actions. While a Plutonian crisis can set the stage for engaging in such a transformation, in the end you must make a conscious decision to accept your responsibilities and purify your life and psyche. Through spiritual struggle, you must drive away the negativity of your attachment to material desires. Only then will your desires be purified. When you are free of negative tendencies and negative desires, you can act on a transcendent level, practicing right-action with confidence and vigilance.
If you are too insecure within yourself to face the perils of transformation, you will employ the qualities associated with Pluto to evade and escape any real transformation. It may appear to you that you are being successful because you may be able to tap into a source of power and magnetism that you then use to get what you want, often through deception. You may see nothing wrong with “the ends justifying the means” as long as your desires are fulfilled. Another distraction from the transformative work symbolized by Mars sextile Pluto is the opportunity that you may have to pursue sexuality to excess. You may even be consumed by desire for sex and/or power in the form of lust. You may feel powerful, but in giving in to your lower desires, you waste a valuable opportunity to gain a higher level of consciousness and of action.-- Gargatholil Back to Top
Mars square Pluto is generally seen as a very difficult aspect, since the forces symbolized by Mars and Pluto and shown to be in conflict by the square are both associated with power, force and violence. The square suggests that powerful forces block your actions and prevent you from fulfilling your desires. These forces may be external to you or they may be your own subconscious "darker" forces.
If the Plutonian energy is manifested externally, you are may find that your actions are blocked by powerful people or institutions. You may also find that forces that are beyond your control are apt to destroy whatever you have accomplished. It may be that whenever you assert yourself, you are put down or you are forced to front an oppressive situation. This may make you frustrated and angry. It may also make you feel powerless.
In fact, lack of power and control over your actions or over your ability to pursue your desires is a common manifestation of this square. The lack of control associated with Mars square Pluto may be situational or it may be felt. You may feel that life does not afford you the opportunity to control your own destiny, whether setting your own goals or trying to implement your goals by taking action.
Ultimately, whatever external manifestations of conflict with power you may experience, they are reflections of an inner conflict involving power that you are dealing with consciously or subconsciously. You know that power can be used for good or evil and your knowledge, and fear, of evil may inhibit your ability to act with clarity and exercise of power. Power is ultimately necessary for action to take place and desire to be actualized. If you fear that you will misuse power, if you bear shame or guilt over your past misuse of power, or if you have any suspicion or belief that power is inherently evil, you will feel conflicted over your exercise of power and therefore over your right to assert yourself through taking action.
This "dark side" of the power spectrum exists within the collective consciousness and the Mars-Pluto square suggests that, in some way, you are being forced to confront this darkness. If the confrontation is not conscious, or if it remains unresolved, then your own actions, directed by your subconscious, are likely to bring about conflict with external power. Such conflict usually will lead to failure and the destruction of your aims and activities.
This dark conflict can be overcome generally only by experiencing crisis. Such a crisis may result in you harnessing the power of the subconscious and using the creative tension produced by conflict as a force motivating your will to act. If you take this decision consciously, you determine to wield power and use that power to your advantage. This may be done in either a positively or negatively. If the decision is undertaken subconsciously, you can become compulsively driven to act. Your compulsiveness may be expressed in a fixation on control, an unrelenting drive toward power, or animal-spirited sexuality. Such a crisis may also result in the transformation of your desire/action function. However, this transformation is usually only achieved with difficulty and even pain.
The Mars-Pluto square also symbolizes the transformative force symbolized by Pluto being blocked by your attachment to personal desires and by the assertion of your ego-self through your activities in the world. Your desires and actions therefore remain engaged at the subconscious level, driven by forces you are not aware of and oppressed by forces beyond your control.
Mars also symbolizes your animus (the masculine psychological archetype or male sexuality). If you are a man, you may feel that your masculinity is threatened by others' power or that you are essentially powerless. Often, you will overcompensate for this feeling of powerlessness or react to the perceived threat to your ego by trying to project a super-masculine image. You may do this in your attempt to convince yourself and the world that you are indeed "a man", i.e., powerful. The machismo that you display is often brutal and violent, particularly when you are feeling--or has been made to feel--most powerless.
If you are a woman, the Mars-Pluto square suggests that you are prone to engaging in conflict with males. This often mirrors a conflicted ambiguity within yourself concerning your relation with power and the extent to which you have power or should exercise power to assert yourself. Frequently, your conflict is with males who are expressing a need for power and control. Again, the conflict may take a brutal or violent turn. Part of resolving the Mars-Pluto square may be for you to positively resolve your masculine identity or for you to learn to be in a positive relationship with a male partner. This may require a deep, honest and difficult exploration of your animus.
Meeting the Challenge and Transcendent Potential
Meeting the challenge of the Mars-Pluto square requires that you rise above the internal and external conflict between your desires/actions and the manifestations of power and control. You can do this and can realize the transcendent potential of Mars square Pluto by facing the crisis brought about by this conflict and by transforming your desire/action function. In the process, the energies symbolized by Pluto are also transformed.
This transformation begins when, in order to try to deal with your blocked and frustrated desires and actions, you engage in an introspective examination of your motives and desires. You find that you have subconsciously polarized your desires so that some of them are grouped as positive and others are manifested, internally and/or externally, as dark forces. This polarization may also be present along an active-passive continuum. Upon closer inspection and soul searching, however, you may discover that your "positive" desires and actions are not entirely selfless and laudable and that the "dark forces" within or manifested externally are simply the subconscious's attempt to bring the need for this evaluation and transformation to your attention.
The next step is to rid out those desires and motivations that are ego-based and are not serving a useful function in your life. This is difficult and painful, since you have a great attachment to these desires and modes of action. The difficulty is compounded because you fear the unknown--what forces may be unleashed if your ego loses control over its ability to assert itself. Thus, you must go deeper into your psyche to discover the source of your fears, the source of your attachment and, ultimately, the Source of Power and Love which lies burning and shining within you. Only then will you be strong enough to let go of your ego-desires and let them fall into the fire of Truth and be destroyed.
Frodo's quest to destroy the Ring comes to mind. Like Frodo, you must enter the depths of your Mordor to accomplish this task. The end, however, will be freedom--freedom from the compulsive control exercised by your ego and the ego-dominated parts of your subconscious. Your desire now attaches itself to the Real. Your actions become truly powerful, as they are motivated by the Power of Love.
If you are inwardly insecure, you are particularly vulnerable to feeling that you must defend yourself against the dark forces that would destroy you. However, in the process, you are manipulated and controlled by these same forces. You pursue your own selfish desires against a backdrop of the constant threat that you will be robbed of the results of your actions. You also experience an almost perennial conflict involving power and control issues. You do not act, but rather you react. Your reactions are prompted and controlled by your fears, by the threats you see posed by others, and by your lust and your drive for power.
At some point, in some way, the forces you are confronting will destroy you. You have identified yourself with your ego and these forces, though you may see them as selfish and untrue, are fighting to destroy your ego and its untruth. Your will to act may be destroyed early in your life. You are never allowed to act in order to assert yourself or your desires. You live in fear of the pain and oppression that might occur if you attempted to do so. You may be destroyed later in life in a conflagrating crisis, brought down by your own hubris and the actions you have performed while having succumbed to the intoxication of power. Your ability to act independently and consciously may be destroyed so that your actions are determined by the subconscious force of obsessive compulsion. You may secretly give in to dark desires and lose your soul. Or the brutality and cruelty of your own actions, taken in your "defense", may destroy you spiritually.-- Gargatholil Back to Top
Mars trine Pluto symbolizes the attunement of your action/desire function to the energies symbolized by Pluto. You may have a predisposition toward transformative growth. If so, the Mars trine suggests that growth-transformation will be focused on your desire complex and on the behavior patterns that stem from these desires. Usually, this aspect is found in combination with a Neptune-Mars contact (either the sextile or the opposition). Thus, any crisis-induced transformation will generally be accompanied by or be accomplished by refining and transcending your desires and actions.
The Mars-Pluto trine also may symbolize an attunement of the desire/action function to other qualities symbolized by Pluto--particularly power and sexuality. This attunement may be lead to your engagement in the transformative process or you may use it as a defense against the transformative process. If your attunement to these Plutonian qualities is at the transformative level, you will be able to tap into your inner power and strength to propel you to take courageous action spiritually to purge your desire nature and refine your mode of action. Otherwise, you may find yourself inclined to desire power and/or sexuality for their own sakes, while easily able to act to fulfill those desires.
To the extent that you are attuned to the Plutonian energy, your actions can easily and naturally take on various Plutonian qualities, such as empowerment and integrity, but also secrecy, intensity and obsession with control. These qualities generally allow you to act with authority in order to fulfill your desires. You may also find that you act intuitively, seemingly guided by an unseen power. This often enables you to act decisively and "cut to the quick." You may possess natural abilities to manage and control, which allow you to act effectively during periods of crisis. However, as long as your desires are fixed on power and control issues, you will fail to achieve transformative growth with respect to your desire/action function.
Mars also symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype or male sexuality). If you are male, the Mars-Pluto trine suggests that your masculinity is attuned to power, intensity and sexuality. Your animus may also naturally project magnetism or mystery. If you are a woman, the trine suggests that you are comfortable forming relationships with who men exhibit Plutonian characteristics. Whether male or female, the Mars-Pluto trine suggests that you have the capacity experience your animus at a deep psychological level. If you engage your animus, you will often find that the experience is transformative, accompanied by you confronting your shadow side, acknowledging your shadow and freeing yourself from its control.
If either Mars or Pluto has a difficult aspect from another planet, the trine suggests a way for you to relieve the stress that is associated with the difficult aspect. Often, honest insight and engaging a situation with integrity can ease any stress caused by some problem of action (when the difficult aspect is to Mars). Being in tune with your ability to empower your actions can also be helpful in resolving a difficult situation. Sometimes, however, there may be a temptation for you to cope with a stressful situation by resorting to force and abusing your power.
Taking action or focusing your desires can usually help you bring balance and harmony to a stressful situation involving crisis or oppression when the difficult aspect is to Pluto. This may be particularly fruitful when you can take action to confront a Plutonian crisis and move the crisis to its next stage of development toward the ultimate purging of your negative tendencies. Honestly taking stock of your desires and then acting on them may help you to become more attuned to pursuing your goals, especially if you are caught in a feeling of helplessness.
You can realize the transcendent potential of Mars trine Pluto when you actualize your natural affinity for Truth and Reality in order to transform your desire nature and the basis of your actions. This involves attuning yourself to an inner Radiance that purifies and then pulls you to higher levels of consciousness. Through spiritual struggle, the negativity of attachment to material desires is driven from you and your desires become pure. You now act in total harmony with Truth and Love, practicing right-action with confidence and vigilance. Your only desire is to unite with the Source of all Power and Truth and all of your actions are devoted to achieving this reality.
If you are inwardly insecure, you will attune yourself to those qualities associated with Pluto that you can use to evade and escape real transformation. You may find yourself aligned with a source of power and magnetism that you can use to get what you want through force or deception. You may see this as a good thing. You may also be inclined to pursue sexuality to excess. Lust, for sex and/or power, may consume you. Indulging in sexuality and/or power allows the Plutonian-Martian energy to flow freely without you experiencing any difficult or real transformation. You may also enjoy asserting your power and controlling events and/or other people. You may adopt a "means justify the ends” strategy and thus lose any hope of raising your actions to a higher level. All this, however, is just a subconscious device to protect your ego from having to confront its unreality and the unreality of its desires and actions.-- Gargatholil Back to Top
Mars quincunx Pluto symbolizes your lack a natural ability to integrate your desires and actions internally with your subconscious drives and motivations and externally with the constructs and vehicles through which power is expressed. Normally, those subconscious motivations that are not at variance with your conscious desires would be translated into actions. Also you would normally learn to adapt your personal desires to the realities of the level of your empowerment and the limitations imposed by others’ power. By recognizing that there are times when you need to take the overall power situation into consideration, you learn to take action more effectively in the world. This, in turn, ultimately leads you to experience more success in fulfilling your desires.
With Mars quincunx Pluto, you are likely to be completely unaware of your real motivations for taking action or why you really desire certain things. You are also apt to be unaware of the motivations, conscious or subconscious, of others. Also, the concept that your actions could or should have any relation to the realities of power--power possessed by yourself or by others—may be completely foreign to you. This may result in you appearing naive about power, and also about sexuality. It makes you vulnerable to control by others without you being aware of it.
For you, all action or desire is likely to be immediate and singular. You see nothing behind your motivations and actions or those of others. You, therefore see no reason either to discover or to transform your motivations or your mode of action. This is not to say that you may not have well-developed insight, an intellectual or emotional understanding of power, or an appreciation of sexuality. Your actions and desires may be strong or even effective, as well. However, if you have indeed developed Plutonian characteristics in your personality, you are apt to have great difficulty integrating these into your pattern of action or applying these traits to your desires.
You have had to learn through the experience of personal crisis and hard lessons to take power and sexuality seriously when you are taking action. It has also been difficult for you to learn to look behind the veil of the apparent with regard to your actions and desires. The end result of you learning these hard lessons may be that you gain greater insight into your actions and desires through being in touch with your own truth and source of power. Another result may be that you now have a greater ability to deal with power. You may also have more control over your actions and desires than is normally the case.
There are usually certain critical times in your life when your active/desiring function and the functions associated with transformation/purification and dealing with power, death or sexuality require a level of integration and coordination that you have not yet achieved. Your actions and desires may lack empowerment or they may be bereft of insight. They may also lack integrity. This is generally because your actions and desires do not connect with your inner source of power and truth. A crisis may occur because you cannot deal with a complicated or negative situation involving power, death or sexuality. You may fail to act in a critical situation (sometimes retreating into an attitude of powerlessness in order to avoid taking action). You may also fail to act truthfully and with integrity during such a crisis.
Crises and lessons experienced by you serve to either purify or transform your desires and mode of action. These crises can be particularly powerful and transformative given Pluto’s natural association with the quincunx. You will generally create a situation from which there is no painless way out. The solution is hinted at in the quincunx’s association with the sixth and the eighth houses, representing purification and transformation. Problems may arise because either your action/desire function or the way in which you react to power, death or sexuality needs correction. This will often involve gauging and taking the appropriate action in response to intense of threatening situations.
The mode of action that must be corrected typically involves either your abuse of power or your lack of power (or your unwillingness to exercise it). It may also be related to your blindness toward the truth. Your ability to take correct action and/or to purify your desires and motivations will usually require that you closely examine your motivations and desires and that you cast out any negativity. The need to transform your behavior or attitude often must take place under the pressure of a life crisis. Overall, it is critical that you allow your desire/activity and power/transformative functions to mutually affect each other, change each other and respond to one another.
Generally, there is a sense of urgency or time element in the need to go to the root of your (or others') motivations and activities and to identify and take into consideration the proper power relationships. This generally will require a transformation of your mode of action, as well as the root of your desires. There may be a moment of opportunity, demanding courage to grasp, during which you can resolve the crisis. If the crisis is resolved, the result will be that your desires will be purified and you will act with greater empowerment, insight and integrity, producing right-action. If the crisis is not resolved, compulsive and/or impure desires and actions; failure to act in an empowering manner, the lost opportunity for real transformation and/or personal humiliation may result, but hopefully you will have learned a lesson that can motivate future purification and transformation of the desire/activity and/or power/transformative complex.
Mars also symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype). The quincunx of Mars and Pluto suggests that you are subconsciously disconnected with your animus. Consequently, you have little real understanding of your animus, which probably means that it is totally under the domination of the Collective Consciousness. Therefore, your animus is likely to be to be stereotypical in nature. However, since most of the population can be characterized in these terms, your conformist approach to masculinity may only be a matter of degree. You may also have little understanding or sympathy for men who exhibit Plutonian characteristics.
You can realize the transcendent potential of Mars quincunx Pluto when you become keenly aware of the lack of purity in your motivations and deeds, particularly, but not exclusively, as this relates to power, integrity and/or sexuality. Once you make this connection, you become ever observant of how your actions may reflect your awareness of the inner Truth and ultimate Source of Power. You realize that your desires and actions must be integrated and consistent with your knowledge that there is only One Power in the universe and that all activity stems from and must serve this Power.
In order to control your desires and actions, you may take up some spiritual discipline through which to seek the Reality of the Inner Self. When you your desires have been properly integrated with this practice, you will develop a yearning for the self to consummate its Union with the Self. Devotion then becomes a path of rightly-guided action so that your soul may ultimately plunge itself into the Fire of Love and merge back into its One True Source. This state has not come, however, without a struggle involving a crisis of personal desire accompanied by some very difficult lessons and experiences.
Because you are inwardly insecure, you have ignored the cosmic lessons symbolized by the quincunx, preferring to cling to your own willfulness and false sense of independence. Thus, you have experienced your actions rebounding on you, often with crushing force. Typically, you will act selfishly where respect for legitimate power and authority are called for. You may attempt to grab power or abuse your natural sexuality. Your failure to perceive that you must examine your own motivations and desires, follow the course of truth, and respect the limits of power and your own independence of action will, at times, bring about calamity. When you refuse to learn from your mistakes and/or if you lack the courage to act appropriately, you are doomed to repeat this pattern over and over.-- Gargatholil Back to Top
Mars opposed Pluto suggests that, in your psyche, action, and the conscious desire that is the precursor of action, conflict directly and seem incompatible with those subconscious motivators that are propelling you toward compulsive action or that are energizing your will to power and control. Actions that spring from your personal desire or actions that are performed impulsively (but self-assertively) are often in contradiction with your subconscious goals. Since the subconscious, when thwarted, often seeks other means to express itself, you often find you’re your desires and actions are opposed with force and power, externally, or that they are subverted by your own subconscious force. If, on the other hand, you attempt to control events and/or accumulate power, you are likely to find that you must sacrifice your personal desires and curb your inclination to act immediately. You are also likely to discover that your natural impulsiveness, aggressiveness or self-assertion prevent you from successfully achieving power and control.
You are sometimes conflicted about whether you should follow your desires or whether you should follow a deeper intuition. This conflict may appear as a struggle between impulsive self-gratification and the voice of conscience. An alternative expression of the conflict, particularly if the Plutonian side of your psyche is out of balance, may manifest as a struggle to break free of compulsiveness and/or external control and to assert your own desires by taking independent action. Sometimes you may feel that you can never act freely without being opposed by forces that you see as dark and controlling. Alternatively, you may feel that your power and ability to control your own destiny are constantly under attack.
You may swing from one side to the other along the spectrum represented by Mars and Pluto. You may be at one time wild and impulsive, ready to undertake any activity, daring to meet any challenge. At other times, you may be secretive and defensive, obsessed with maintaining control and plotting your strategies with Machiavellian care. The tension and conflict associated with the Mars-Pluto opposition are the result of lack of balance and/or conflict/ambiguity between these two extremes.
Achieving some balance between the two extremes may allow you to work to liberate and actualize your subconscious and hidden desires so that they do not secretly work against you. This may allow you to blend some of the complementary positive qualities associated with Mars and Pluto. Your intuition may play and important role in guiding your actions. In order to positively use the tension symbolized by Mars opposed Pluto, you may need to exercise more control over your impulses.
By bringing the tension that you feel between action and power into balance, you can act in ways that take advantage of existing power relationships. This requires you to realize the role that action plays in the exercise of power. Action is power's proper tool and, as a tool, it should be used wisely and for good. Another result of bringing the tension symbolized by Mars opposed Pluto into balance is that you can learn to restrain your anger until your natural impulse to flare up has dissipated, but then constructively release your aggression.
Mars symbolizes the animus (the masculine psychological archetype or male sexuality). The Mars-Pluto opposition suggests that your anima is faced with issues involving power and/or sexuality/intimacy. If you are a woman, Mars opposed Pluto suggests that you may be either attracted to or repulsed by men who exemplify power and/or sexuality (or deep intimacy). Whether these relationships are healthy or dysfunctional will depend upon the extent to which you have confronted your subconscious animus and resolved these issues. Another possible manifestation symbolized by Mars opposed Pluto is that your exercise of power may leave your male partner feeling powerless. You may also surreptitiously wield power over or through your partner.
If you are a man, you may feel that your masculinity is continually being challenged and that you must display your power and overt sexuality in order to assert your masculinity. You may also become attracted to a woman who exudes sexuality and/or power, or with whom you can establish a seriously intimate relationship. Such relationships, however, are vulnerable to being plagued by power struggles as you attempt to assert your masculinity and control the feminine power that has attracted you.
For both men and women, the Mars-Pluto opposition suggests a potential for serious psychological work involving your animus. You may be called upon to confront the shadow side of your animus and pursue its psychological transformation. This may be a difficult and even painful process, but the results should be positive.
You can realize the transcendent potential of Mars opposed Pluto when you confront your subconscious desires, your will for power and your need for self-assertion. You must then transform your desires and your mode of action through a process of purification and of discarding your lower tendencies and inclinations. This process is most likely to begin with an internal crisis during which you discover your darker side and its relation to your conscious desires. Sometimes, this internal crisis may be provoked by an external crisis provoked when you are unable to fulfill your desires.
Once you have discovered the compulsive and selfish basis for your behavior, you can resolve to transform your actions by focusing your desires toward spiritual union and by conforming your actions to the guidance received from your deep, inner voice. You should continue to probe your motivations and the real causes of your actions. As your selfish motivations are exposed, you must expurgate them from your life. In this way, through constant crisis of the soul, your desires and actions are purified and become exemplary.
The power and the light within you grow and your desire bends more and more toward your eternal Source. As you internally become more pure, qualities of magnetism, power and Truth are manifested through you. You become Righteous and, because you have attained an unselfish purity, your righteousness is tempered by compassion.
If you are inwardly insecure, you will react to the tension and conflict associated with the Mars-Pluto opposition by establishing subconscious defense mechanisms. These are likely to take the form of confrontation, suppression or projection. In each case, you attach yourself to one side of the opposition or the other. If a confrontational defense mechanism is established, you are most likely to take the side symbolized by your desire/action function. You will see yourself confronting dark, evil and powerful forces that are arrayed against you. You may feel that these very forces block your actions and thwart your desires. Your response is likely to be aggressive, directing your anger against the powers aligned against you or even attacking them.
Many would label your behavior as paranoid. Yet, you are likely to see yourself in heroic and courageous terms. If you lose the struggle, you become a victim and a martyr. You also receive psychological gratification because you are standing up for what you want. The confrontational defense mechanism achieves its purpose because you remain attached to your desires and mode of action and they undergo no ego-threatening transformation.
If you are attached to the Plutonian pole of the opposition, the result may be similar except that you adopt a defensive position against attack by forces that you are likely to see as either powerful or subversive. You may feel that your power is under attack and that your core or something basic is threatened. Your response is likely to be ruthless and instinctual.
If you use suppression as a defense mechanism, you are most likely to suppress the Plutonian side of your psyche. You may have subconscious desires that you do not acknowledge and that manifest themselves in compulsive actions or uncharacteristic behavior. This is the Jungian shadow operating within you. As you see yourself, you are operating in a normal, conscious mode, participating in everyday life activities. In actuality, you may engage in activities related to your subconscious desires that you hide from others and even yourself. You, consciously, may feel that you are innocent of any lust for power, but you act otherwise.
If you have suppressed your Martian energy, you are suppressing or are failing to manifest your own personal desires. You are, therefore, acting almost totally through your subconscious mind. You may be passive and weak-willed (even though you may think that you are powerful). You may feel no personal desires and you may not know what you want to do. This leaves you open to being controlled and manipulated by others. Since you often do not recognize that this is happening, you are content. You do not have to acknowledge and try to actualize your desires and deal with issues involving power. You do not have to explore your subconscious motivations. If you are not controlled by external forces, then it is your subconscious that controls you. If this is true, you are likely to live a life in which your actions are instinctual, rather conscious.
If you adopt projection as a defense mechanism, you will likely be attracted to a partner or to an institution that exemplifies whatever pole of the opposition you have suppressed. If you have suppressed your Plutonian side, you are likely to be attracted to people who are powerful, sexual, and/or exemplify something that you have suppressed in your own subconscious. Often, there is violence associated with the relationship. You are also often attracted to the trappings of power and may use others, consciously or unconsciously, as an avenue to accumulate power yourself.
If you have
suppressed the Martian element within you, you are
likely to be attracted to someone who is strong,
vigorous and masculine. You then take on a role
that is behind the scenes, using or expecting the other
person to act on your behalf to obtain what you
desire. Often your desires are not consciously
expressed, so that your partner may not have a clear
understanding of what is expected of him/her. This
can create misunderstanding and friction.
Sometimes, you may be attracted to a military situation,
even joining the military. If this is the case,
your motivation is likely to provide an outlet for your
power needs and/or suppressed subconscious desires.
