Depth Astrology

A Note to Readers: Those of you who have purchased my book, Depth Astrology: An Astrological Handbook, I could use some reviews!  You can post reviews on Smashwords, Amazon or Barnes and Noble.  That would be very helpful in spreading the word.  Thank you.  -- Gargatholil

This is the forty-third installment of a series of sign-to-sign interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site,

The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects.  As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.

This series continues with Leo-Leo and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the zodiacal wheel factorially with a new zodiacal combination presented each month.  Past month’s articles are archived.  Upon completion, some 3 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will immediately be published as an e-book for sale.

Same sign combinations, generally, can present at least three basic manifestations—compatibility, intensification or irritation.  Compatibility is borne of the shared commonalities that are natural in the pairing of same signs.  Intensification occurs when the pronounced or extreme tendencies inherent in the sign are fed by its pairing with a container carrying the same sign.  Irritation occurs when the negative expressions of a sign’s energy manifest (or mutually manifest), creating the kind of tension that is exemplified by the adage that the traits we hate the most in others are those that we ourselves possess.  With Leo-Leo, we have a fourth manifestation--competition, which will be discussed below.  The Leo-Leo analysis, with appropriate modification, also applies to other astrological symbol sets associated with the same cardinal fire energy--Leo fifth house, Sun in Leo, and Sun in the fifth house.
As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s.  When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person.  So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.”  Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.

With Leo-Leo, we have the pairing of the two containers sharing the Fixed Fire sign.  Thus, the relationship between the two containers is largely based on their shared attunement to the outpouring of energy.  This forms the basis for the manifestation of the relationship in the compatibility mode.  In the compatibility mode, the intense fire energy possessed by the two containers will often allow the containers to energize each other.  The two containers will find willing partners in each other to seek adventure (especially exploits that can lead to glory), to be drawn to creative activities (especially those that allow an intense expenditure of energy), and to express themselves to the world--all natural tendencies of the Leo energy.  Thus, we can expect Leos to make good partners in undertaking challenges and activities that test their mettle; in the theater or as musical performers, or collaborating as artists; and in dressing up or otherwise strutting their stuff.  Leo containers will generally find camaraderie in their enjoyment of an active and expressive lifestyle.

There is, of course, also the potential for an understanding of each other's motives and needs.  I say "potential" because, perhaps more than any other same sign combination, that mutual understanding may be blocked (or resisted) due to an unwillingness to acknowledge their own motivations and driving needs.  This is particularly the case when the Leo container is operating from a place of fundamental insecurity, driven by their need to feel recognized and appreciated.  To empathize with the same need in a fellow Leo means compassionately facing their own inner motivations.  It is more likely that you are in denial about these and, therefore, unwilling to understand where your fellow Leo container is coming from.

This, then, is a common cause of the Leo-Leo relationship manifesting as irritation.  It may often be that you cannot tolerate behavior in other Leos whose underlying motivation is to draw attention to themselves.  This reaction can also be entangled in the competitive relationship that can often arise among Leos.  A part of your reaction to the attention-seeking behavior of another Leo may be rooted in your own desire to have the limelight be shining on you, instead.

When their interests align and the scope for competition is limited, there can be other areas of compatibility based upon shared views and temperament.  For instance, two Leo parents may share an authoritarian or paternalistic parenting style, or a Leo couple may support each others' generosity, or two Leo friends may be intensely loyal to each other.   This compatibility is especially beneficial when positive Leo traits are supported and reinforced in a Leo-Leo relationship.

As noted above, the Leo-Leo combination can also result in an intensification of Leo qualities.  This would be even more likely when the Leo containers are conjunct or in a stellium.  Being a Fixed sign, Leo traits already tend to be intense.  The agglomeration of Leo energy can produce overpowering force and dominance exercised by the Leo containers.  Acting together, the Leo containers can present an active energy that is hard to resist.  Other Leo qualities that may be particularly subject to intensification are anger, pride, jealousy, authoritarian demeanor, loyalty, generosity, regalness, drama and passion.  Taking these qualities to their intense extremes is likely to cause imbalance and/or destructive behavior.  It is not uncommon that any of these qualities in the extreme can lead to the downfall of the Leo container(s).  However, positive Leo qualities can also be enhanced and remain in balance, thus creating a positive cycle of productive energy.

Attention-seeking behavior is one possible source of Leo-Leo irritation, as noted above.  Other likely causes of irritation and conflict between Leo containers include authoritarian or domineering behavior, demands for loyalty, showing off and bragging, and acts of reprisal (particularly for perceived disloyalty).  Of course, such negative Leo behavior is likely to put off anyone, but another Leo may be particularly quick to react (or, in the case of containers within the same psyche, to be provoked to self-criticism or self-loathing).  However, another Leo container may even become irritated at ostensibly positive manifestations of Leo traits, becoming suspicious of the other Leo's motives.  Internally, this can manifest as self-doubt, as the Leo native calls into question their own behavioral motivations.

Competition between Leo containers is likely to occur in the Leo-Leo relationship.  This can be between individuals or between parts of the psyche represented by the Leo containers.  At the root of this Leo competition is the cry for attention.  The Leo container is likely to view the battle for attention as a zero sum game.  If you are getting the attention, it means I am not, and I want it.  The Leo container may seek attention, respect and love in a variety of ways.  Some are positive and some are negative.  Thus, in one type of Leo competition, the Leo containers will try to outdo each other in manifesting positive Leo attributes.  Closely related is when Leo containers compete for some prize, whether this is an actual prize or, more commonly, the distinction of being the best.

Drama may arise when one Leo container decides that losing the contest for attention is not an acceptable outcome and reverts to negative attention-seeking behavior in order to steal the show away from the more positively successful rival.  This can range from temper tantrums to attention-diverting drama to sabotage or more sinister attempts to subvert an honest competition.  This general type of behavior may also mark longer-term rivalry between two Leo containers, in which each one tries to grab the limelight and thrust the other out of the limelight through a variety of conscious or unconscious measures.

In order to avoid such destructive and unpleasant behavior, even the rivalry to display the better qualities of Leo, you must learn the lesson of giving for the sake of giving.  True generosity seeks no reward, not even the reward of recognition for your merits.  As Jesus said, "Let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing."  When the Leo container acts without expecting reward or acknowledgment, you become free to follow the passion that will lead you to your transcendent purpose.  Leo's glyph, the Lion, is associated with the heart chakra (note, Richard the Lion-hearted).  When both Leo containers conquer their need for ego-validation, then they become free to let their energies feed each other's empowerment.  Then, their hearts can truly merge.  A great mystic has said, "Love is losing your own identity and becoming another person."  When that other person is the Divine Beloved, then two Leo containers striving to merge into the Divine can fully support each other in their passion for that endeavor.  This is also the source for the Leo containers supporting each other's exploration of the heart chakra and their positive manifestation of the heart chakra energy.

Of course, all of the Leo-Leo dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people.  The Leo-Leo energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s.  The depositorship of the Sun may also come into play.  -- Gargatholil
