SIGN-SIGN RELATIONSHIPS

This is the twenty-eighth installment of a series of interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site, https://www.smashwords.com/books/byseries/13223.

The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects.  As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.

This series continues with Gemini-Libra and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the zodiacal wheel factorially with a new zodiacal combination presented each month.  Past month’s articles are archived.  Upon completion, some 4 1/4 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will immediately be published as an e-book for sale.

GeminiLibra

Gemini-Libra potentially resonates with the trine aspect between two planets.  Additionally, semiquadrates can exist between planets in the first half of Gemini and the last half of Libra.  Also, out-of-sign quincunxes  can exist between planets in very early Gemini and very late Libra and out-of-sign squares can exist between planets in late Gemini and early Libra.  Thus, the Gemini-Libra relationship is generally seems to be harmonious but conflict and complication can also exist between containers in the two signs.   Interpreting the Gemini-Libra combination may also shed some light on a number of related symbol sets.  These include Gemini in the seventh house, Libra in the third house, Mercury in Libra, Venus in Gemini, Mercury in the seventh house, Venus in the third house, and aspects between Mercury and Venus.

As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s.  When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person.  So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.”  Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.

With Gemini-Libra, we have the dynamic between two Air signs, one Mutable and the other Cardinal.  While Air is naturally compatible with itself, the Mutable and Cardinal modalities can either be in a harmonious or difficult relationship.  One can conger the image of wind with both Mutable and Cardinal Air but the Cardinal modality produces a constant wind while the Mutable modality produces a "fickle" wind--a wind that frequently changes direction or that alternates with periods of calm.  Most often, however, the compatibilities between Gemini and Libra will override the opportunities for friction associated mainly with the modalities.

Air is very compatible with both the mental medium that infuses Gemini and the social medium that infuses Libra.  For air is the least "material" of the four elements, as the mental plane is the least material of planes of existence within the construct of Universal Mind, or Brahm.  Air does not weigh down the mind and thought can "travel" quickly through it because it offers very little resistance.  Air is also the medium that carries sound through which much of our communication occurs, communication being important to both mental exchange and social exchange.  The ubiquitousness of air and the opportunity and potentiality that is inherent in its apparent lack of form relates to the opportunities we have for social contact that, theoretically, are almost unconstrained (except as we constrain ourselves through the imposition of social boundaries).

It is the nexus of communication and social interaction that particularly binds Gemini and Libra in a harmonious relationship.  Gemini appreciates and thrives on the social energy of Libra.  The Libra container can open up, even more, a social world into which Gemini can step and in which you can play.  Libra may supply an audience, or access to multiple audiences, as well as engage in social conversation with Gemini.  In fact, Libra's natural tendency toward attentiveness can be very well received by Gemini, for Libra will rarely pull away from or reject Gemini's conversational advances.

It is Libra's attentiveness and quest for social harmony that may be the source of some friction between the Gemini and Libra containers, however, for Libra, the peace-maker, often demands the same attentiveness to preserving harmony of others as he/she/it does of her/him/itself.  A Gemini container is apt to be far less concerned about this, taking relationships rather lightly.  While Gemini may not often intentionally hurt the feelings of others, you may be blithely unaware of any social faux pas resulting from your lack of social commitment, your ability to spin away from a conversational partner at a moment's distraction.  The Cardinal aspect of Libra Air tends to hold to form (after all, Saturn is exalted in Libra).  The Mutable aspect of Gemini Air tends toward liberation from form.  When applied to social situations this can result in the Libra container perceiving Gemini as insensitive and even egoistic.

It is not as if Gemini is always totally scattered and oblivious to social circumstances and civilities.  Mental energy requires form, as well, and the natural Libran affinity to form and beauty can act as a "good influence" on Gemini, centering and stabilizing Gemini's tendency to scatter by focusing on common appreciation.  For, though there is a certain danger of intellect for intellect's sake, there is a certain beauty in thought communicated, in beauty perceived, that both Libra and Gemini can appreciate.  More generally, both can feel at home in either the world of thought or the world of relationship when those worlds are adequately governed by form.

The dynamic between Mutable and Cardinal Air may play out in other ways to cause some friction between containers in the two signs.  As noted above, Cardinal Libra does gravitate toward seeking stability, while Mutable Gemini can exhibit energies and qualities that Libra may perceive as destabilizing.  Gemini's constant running hither and yon, seemingly sometimes without a center, can trouble a Libra container's sense of and need for balance.  Libra often has enough to do to keep its/his/her own balance and, when confronted by Gemini's multiplicity of interests and activities, can feel overwhelmed and unable to keep up, or keep it together.  Gemini may pull Libra in too many directions so that it becomes impossible for Libra to keep all of these balls in the air and bring everything into the balance that he/it/she seeks.

Gemini, on the other hand, may feel somewhat constrained by Libra's insistence on restraint lest someone be offended, or ignored, or be displeased, or not have their needs met.  The Saturnian underpinning, the stability that Libra finds necessary in order to maintain harmonious relationships, may feel to Gemini as a drag on his/her/its freedom.  Gemini typically will want to be able to do anything and everything but a Libra companion is apt to say "no, you can't do that," subtly or not so subtly.

Again, if Libra and Gemini can recognize and appreciate their vast common ground, there is apt to be room for compromise and mutual understanding.  Gemini's tendency toward scatteredness may be curbed somewhat under the steadying influence of the more balanced Libra energy.  Libra's tendency to avoid risk, particularly social risk, that can act as a constraint can be freed somewhat through engagement with Gemini spontaneity.

Looking at the two signs through their
glyphs can bring further insight into how their energies can interact.  Both glyphs are symbols of duality--the Twins and the Balance.  Thus, both Gemini and Libra tend to be adept at looking at both sides of an issue.  This promotes tolerance, both mutual tolerance and tolerance toward others.  It can also enliven conversation, as neither side is so wedded to their point of view as to stifle or block productive dialectic and a thorough examination of the matter from all sides.  This ability to accept multiplicity and let go of one-sidedness can also lead to an expansion of horizons and a greater understanding of the nature of things (resonating to the Sagittarian polarity to Gemini and Sagittarius' natural sextile to Libra).

This tolerance for multiplicity and ability to see both sides of things also may exacerbate tendencies toward indecision and noncommitalness in both containers.  When Libra's famous inability to reach a decision meets Gemini's equal reluctance to commit to a decision, a prescription for paralytic inaction is formed.  Gemini can gladly supply his/her/its Libra counterpart with innumerable choices, further perplexing the Libra container and making it all the more difficult to choose only one alternative.

The glyphs also shed some light on the task that each sign symbolizes with regard to duality.  The Gemini Twins, Pollux and Castor, set out into the world to experience the diversity that duality has produced in the Creation.  The Gemini energy is, in many ways, about ricocheting off one thing to its opposite in order to maximize the experience of the world.  Libra's task is to bring duality into balance, to reconcile and harmonize polar opposites.  To do this, both sides must not only be experienced, but embraced.  While Gemini seeks to know both sides of things, Libra needs to relate to both ends of the dualistic spectrum.

How does this affect the relationship between the Gemini and Libra containers?  First, it allows symbiosis to occur and flow between the containers in the two signs.  Gemini is free to engage in experience of all sorts, bringing that experience to the Libra container.  This may enliven and broaden the Libra container's experience of the world, enriching its/her/his capacity for relationship and, in a way, freeing Libra to take greater social risks.

Libra functioning as the Great Balancer has the capacity to  harmonize the Gemini experience.  The Gemini container, as he/she/it experiences multiplicity, is bound to encounter contradiction and discordance brought on by the world being expressed in duality.  Of course, Gemini may simply skate over these problem areas.  However, the Libra energy has the capacity to bind together those opposites and create a more harmonious field of experience for Gemini.  Libra may provide relatedness and context for Gemini and, thus, help it/him/her reach the Sagittarian potential of understanding.

The Gemini and Libran urges to experience and harmonize duality, respectively, may also create certain frictions between the two containers.  The Libra container may perceive Gemini as somewhat reckless in her/his/its willingness to experience anything no matter the consequence.  Gemini may appear to be willfully oblivious to consequence and, in fact, such disregard of consequence may be essential to the preservation of Gemini's freedom.  This inattentiveness, however, makes it difficult for Libra to achieve harmony for harmony and balance require a basic acknowledgement of responsibility, which is a precursor to the ability to surrender, compromise, exchange and reach mutual understanding.  The manifestation of this dynamic often will occur in the social field, as Libra stands aghast at the "thoughtless" liberties which Gemini is apt to take without any hesitation.  In the end, this is a friction between freedom and restraint, between uninhibited possibility and the constraint of form.

Indeed, if Libra attempts to actualize its/her/his need to harmonize by trying to rein in (often passive aggressively) Gemini's unfettered drive to experience, Gemini is apt to perceive the ties of decorum with which Libra tries to lay upon him/her/it as unwelcome chains and obstructions to his/her/its freedom.  Libra's desire that the Gemini container act with greater discrimination  (which is so natural for Libra) can be perceived by Gemini as implied judgment upon him/her/it (Gemini behavior being weighed in the Libran Scales of Justice).  The Gemini container may resent such judgmentalism on the part of his/her/its Libra partner and may rebel by engaging in even more social reckless (from Libra's point of view) behavior.

Looking at the ruling planet of both signs, Mercury and Venus functionally exist in a very close relationship.  It is the Venus function that takes the input from the Mercury-symbolized nervous system, categorizes and evaluates that input and feeds it back to the Mercury intellect for analysis and memory storage, which then informs Venusian discrimination and choice on a more conscious level.  Thus, the two sets of functions are meant to work hand in hand.

This tight relationship between the functions symbolized by the two planets mirrors and supports the positive dynamics that are likely to be in place between Gemini and Libra containers.  The communicating/social qualities inherent in Gemini inform and are appreciated by the harmonizing/social qualities inherent in Libra.  Libra is able to contextualize and judge (in a positive sense of the term) the wealth of experiential data that the Gemini container brings to their relationship.  This contextualization then provides mental/social fodder for continuing and enhancing Gemini's experience within their relationship.

Of course, all of the Gemini-Libra dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people.  The Gemini-Libra energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s.  The depositorships of Mercury and Venus may also come into play.  Gargatholil
