Depth Astrology

This is the thirty-first installment of a series of interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site,

The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects.  As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.

This series continues with Gemini-Capricorn and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the zodiacal wheel factorially with a new zodiacal combination presented each month.  Past month’s articles are archived.  Upon completion, some 4 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will immediately be published as an e-book for sale.

Gemini-Capricorn potentially resonates with the quincunx aspect between two planets.  Also, out-of-sign trines can exist between planets in very early Gemini and very late Capricorn and out-of-sign oppositions can exist between planets in late Gemini and early Capricorn.  Thus, the Gemini-Capricorn relationship is one that is prone to crises, which may erupt into conflict, but which also may be marked by harmony.   Interpreting the Gemini-Capricorn combination may also shed some light on a number of related symbol sets.  These include Gemini in the tenth house, Capricorn in the third house, Mercury in Capricorn, Saturn in Gemini, Mercury in the tenth house, Saturn in the third house, and aspects between Mercury and Saturn.

As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s.  When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person.  So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.”  Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.

With Gemini-Capricorn, we have the dynamic between Mutable Air and Cardinal Earth.  While these two elements are generally not known to be compatible, coexistence or indifference, rather than conflict, is the norm in the Gemini-Capricorn relationship, until some crisis occurs that forces the two containers to work together to resolve the crisis.  Regarding their modalities, these may exist harmoniously or may be in conflict.  In Gemini and Capricorn their relationship is often ambiguous.

Images for Gemini and Capricorn may include a traveler along a rock ledge encountering a  wind squall that throws them off-balance or a meandering breeze or vortex that comes upon a solid rock barrier and is dissipated and has to reintegrate.  In the first instance, we can imagine that the wind has been blowing hither and thither all along as the traveler steadily makes their way up the mountain path.  It is only when the traveler comes to a particularly difficult portion of the journey that they encounter the destabilizing effects of a fickle wind.  This forces the traveler to become more alert and nimble in order to maintain their balance and negotiate the buffeting received from various directions.  Thus, the Gemini-Capricorn crisis may have elements of the Capricorn container being threatened by or coming into peril through the actions of the Gemini container.  In response, the Capricorn container must become more Gemini-like and adjust to the destabilized or unpredictable environment or Gemini actions.

There is an underlying motif here, too, that is emblematic of the crisis inherent in the Gemini-Capricorn relationship--the interplay of freedom and responsibility.  Freedom is a core Gemini value.  Gemini values the freedom to explore, to go in any direction that suits them, to change their mind, to communicate without inhibition.  Responsibility is a core Capricorn value.  Capricorn tends to feel responsible for everything--for following (and sometimes enforcing) rules of conduct (and rules about anything), for maintaining structure and guarding convention, for being the practical one (the adult in the room), and for achieving outcomes.  Usually, Capricorn can go along allowing Gemini to have their freedom and Gemini can go along content to have Capricorn shoulder the burden of responsibility.  It is when the two come into conflict or become irreconcilable that a crisis can erupt.

Anyone who has thought deeply about freedom has probably concluded that there is no absolute freedom, at least not at this level of existence.  Setting aside the various external restraints on freedom, freedom is inevitably constrained by its own exercise.  For, it is a law of the material world that once a choice is taken, its opposite is foreclosed.  Ultimately, the exercise of free choice results in various avenues of future choice being blocked.  Eventually, it becomes not just a matter of the road not taken but the individual finds themselves in a situation in which, because of their past exercise of freedom, the range of current choices facing them becomes limited.  Thus, in our everyday existence, freedom is always necessarily limited.  This limitation on our freedom represents the consequences of our actions.  We can look at this in two ways with respect to responsibility.  First, through the limitation of our freedom, we are forced to take responsibility for our choices.  In other words, we are responsible for the situations in which we find ourselves.  Secondly, is the recognition of our responsibility in making choices, the awareness of the responsibility we have in exercising our freedom.  It is the working out of these dynamics, often through mundane and ordinary interactions, for which the relationship between Gemini and Capricorn carry great potential.

In the aforementioned example, in which the Gemini container through the exercise of their freedom forces the Capricorn container to adjust course or else be put at risk, both Gemini and Capricorn confront the freedom-responsibility dilemma.  For Capricorn, this is taking responsibility for the exercise of your freedom.  You may have been going along, following the rules, on autopilot having abdicated your responsibility to act autonomously.  Confrontation with the "irresponsible" actions of Gemini forces you out of this mode.  You now must take hold of your freedom and take responsibility for your own decisions and responses.

For the Gemini container, the task in this crisis is to recognize and accept your role in bringing the crisis about and take responsibility for your actions.  Seeing their effect upon your Capricorn counterpart, you are called upon to self-constrain your own freedom.  In doing this, you are taking responsibility for the effects of your decisions and actions on others.  If either container fails to learn these lessons, if Capricorn simply blames Gemini for their inconsideration without making any adjustments or if Gemini fails to take responsibility for their actions and continues on the same irresponsible course, the crisis between the two containers is bound to reoccur until these lessons are learned.

Turning to the second image, we can again find the theme of freedom versus responsibility.  In this image, it is the Gemini container that is imperiled by the actions of the Capricorn container.  We find Gemini in a situation in which their freedom is contained or restrained by the insistence of the Capricorn container on rigid rules and structure.  For Capricorn, the upholding of such rules and structure is a matter of fulfilling their responsibility.  Coming upon this set of restrictions, however, chafes against Gemini's demand to be free and unbound by regulation and limitation.

Gemini freedom and Capricorn adherence to discipline can co-exist as long as the Capricorn container does not try to impose its set of values and ideas about responsible behavior on Gemini.
This may occur, provoking a quincunx crisis, when the Capricorn container decides that it is time for Gemini to cease their irresponsible ways and conform to the dictates of the super-ego.  This decision may be provoked by particularly egregious undisciplined or fickle behavior on the part of the Gemini container or you may simply have had enough of Gemini's puer unwillingness to commit to anything serious.

If the quincunx
crisis is to be resolved, both the Gemini and Capricorn containers must integrate the freedom-responsibility polarity that is out of balance in their psyches.  This means that the Gemini container must accept the limits of their freedom and begin to exercise their free choice responsibly.  For the Capricorn container, this means you must recognize the validity of Gemini's need for freedom in their thoughts and actions and make appropriate accommodation for this in your own structure-oriented value system.  Doing this inevitably means incorporating a more flexible approach to regulation and structure for yourself.  Otherwise, continuing to hold on to your rigid interpretations while allowing latitude to your Gemini counterpart is sure to generate resentment and judgment on your part

Adjustments around the freedom-responsibility matrix may also be needed with respect to concepts of commitment.  As with responsibility, the Gemini container is called upon to recognize that a life of total non commitment is untenable and destructive to relationships.  For the Capricorn container, on the other hand, it is valuable to realize that commitment need not be an obsessive driving force.  There are relative degrees of commitment and accepting the levels of commitment to which their Gemini partner can come to will make for a healthier relationship.

If these accommodations are not made, the quincunx crisis likely not to be resolved, which means that it will likely be repeated at some future timeFailure to resolve the crisis may occur if the Capricorn container presses Gemini too hard to conform to their structures of discipline, regulation or commitment.  If you succeed in making Gemini conform to your will, you will have taken the life out of your Gemini counterpart.  More likely, the Gemini container will rebel against your efforts, possibly engaging in even more irresponsible of fickle-willed behavior.  On the other hand, if the Gemini container resists the reasonable efforts of their Capricorn counterpart to bring them into a more responsible mode, this may provoke the Capricorn container to impose draconian restrictions on you or your Capricorn counterpart may simply leave the engagement in frustration and disgust

We can also examine the Gemini-Capricorn relationship by further exploring the dynamics between their elements, Air and Earth.  Air is associated with the mental plane, as well as with social relationships and communication.  Earth is associated with the physical world and Capricorn, being a Cardinal modality, with actions taken in and to affect the physical world.  Because of the natural quincunx relationship between Gemini and Capricorn, their tendencies are for each container to operate primarily within their own levels of affinity, mental and physical.  We know, however, that in a balanced state, the separation of the mental and physical worlds is abnormal and unhealthy.  Yet, this separation is endemic in our Western culture, represented by the mind-body separation that permeates so many facets of life.

The Gemini-Capricorn relationship is called upon to resolve this split between the mental and physical worlds.  Again, the tendency of each container is to co-exist in its separated elemental state.  The Capricorn container is likely to view their Gemini counterpart as living in their head and simply take that as an unredeemable feature of the Gemini container.  The Gemini container is likely to view their Capricorn counterpart as solely focused on material rewards (physical plane outcomes) and always being governed by practical considerations to the exclusion of having any life of the mind.

This can easily lead to a convenient specialization of duties in which the Gemini container is in charge of social engagement and communication and the Capricorn container is responsible for steering the entity in practical directions and for achieving success and status in the material world.  This separation of function can continue fairly smoothly as long as one container's activities does not interfere with the other's.  When that occurs, it is likely to provoke a quincunx crisis.  A crisis can also occur when one container is called upon to function outside of their normal sphere of competence.

Examples of situations that may provoke a quincunx crisis are as follows.  The Gemini container may decide that their ideas need to be considered (or be the deciding factor) in decisions that the Capricorn container considers within their purview.  The Capricorn container may view actions taken by the Gemini container in the social sphere or communications by the Gemini container as jeopardizing Capricorn's material pursuits, success or status.  The Capricorn container may be thrown into a social situation or expected to handle communication (either social or within the Gemini-Capricorn relationship) to which they are not accustomed.  The Gemini container may be called upon to take on commitments or responsibilities in the physical sphere.

The solutions to these and other dilemmas typically will require an integration of the mental and physical realms,  For instance, there may be a mutual recognition of the mental activity (collecting and analyzing) needed in order to make practical decisions.  The tried and true cannot always be relied upon to achieve the best outcome without applying thoughtfulness to determine that this approach remains relevant.  Or, the Gemini container may need to accept that their social actions and communications, or even their thoughts, need to take practical concerns into consideration.

Looking at the two signs through their glyphs can bring further insight into how their energies can interact.  The Gemini twins and the Capricornian mountain goat generally have little in common and may rarely interact.  The twins, Castor and Pollux, are denizens of the urban centers and pasture lands and travelers upon the seas.  These are regions in which the mountain goat is generally not seen.  There may be little chance of contact unless one wanders into the environment of the other.

We can imagine such circumstances.  Perhaps the mountain goat has strayed from their mountain pastures into the lowlands, becoming lost and disoriented; or, perhaps the goat has fallen from the mountain heights into the pathway of the twins.  When confronted in these circumstances, Castor and Pollux are faced with the choice: do they act irresponsibly having their fun with the helpless mountain goat, or do they face their responsibility to come to the goat's aid and lead or carry it back to its own environment?  There may be times in the Gemini-Capricorn relationship when the Capricorn container is vulnerable or is in need of assistance.  That consideration for Capricorn's vulnerability or the ability to come to the aid of the Capricorn container is not the norm for the Gemini container.  To rise to the occasion, they must restrain their freedom or inclinations, commit to the task at hand and accept their responsibility within the relationship.

Perhaps it is the twins who have strayed and become lost on the mountain heights.  Though this is likely to have occurred because of their own carelessness, coming upon them, does the mountain goat interrupt its upward ascent to bring the twins back to their home country?  The situation may be even more fraught if the twins, true to their character, fail to recognize the seriousness of their plight and are loath to accept the discipline required if they are to safely make their way down the mountain ravines.  Entreaties for practicality and caution may fall on deaf ears.  In order to reach the twins, the mountain goat may need to learn to communicate, to reason, and to cajole.  The twins, for their part, must ultimately respond to the advice and directions of their guide if they are to be saved from their misadventure.

Looking at the ruling planets of each sign, Mercury and Saturn at first may seem not to share much in common.  Mercury is quick and hot,  Saturn is slow and cold.  Mercury is associated with the lower, or personal, mind and its functions--sensory input, mental processing, communication, and the nervous system.  Saturn is associated with the constricting principle, with order and structure, discipline, limitation, hard lessons and with the skeletal system.  It is easy to see that the signs ruled by these planets are prone to have little interaction with each other.  Yet, the quincunx relationship between them forces interaction to occur under crisis conditions.  The challenge of the Gemini-Capricorn relationship, therefore, is to find those points of commonality that can facilitate the integration of the two energies.

One such point of commonality may be found in the need for structure.  Both Mercury and Saturn can be viewed as "dry" planets (Mercury being waterless and with hardly any atmosphere and Saturn being associated with dry, emotionless qualities).  This "dryness" or lack of emotion can be an element promoting affinity between the two signs.  In its positive formulation, this dryness manifests as reason.  One definition of reason can be that it is mental energy structured by logical form.  Structure is inherent in Mercury's functional capacities--thought, communication, the classification of sensory input.  Without structure, the personal mind would be chaotic and diffuse.  The recognition and acceptance of the need for structure, or more accurately the existence of structure, in all Gemini activities and traits is a first step toward integrating the Gemini and Capricorn energies.

On Capricorn's side, the Capricorn container needs to perceive the role of reason, and thus the mental sphere, in guiding and making possible the success for which you strive.  Structure implies intelligence (unless one subscribes to the theory that all structure is accidental, useful only through adaptation and organized only due to the mind's perception).  To follow structure blindly, unthinkingly, is not only to abdicate both freedom and responsibility, but is also a route to failure.  Thus, it is ultimately important that the Capricorn container incorporate the guidance of their Gemini counterpart (filtering this, as needed, through your own sense of practicality) in applying reason and inquiry to selecting the path along which you will make your upward ascent.  The facility to see both sides of an argument and the flexibility to change course when advisable, are positive Gemini traits to be integrated into the Capricorn perspective.

Of course, all of the Gemini-Capricorn dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people.  The Gemini-Capricorn energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s.  The depositorships of Mercury and Saturn may also come into play.  Gargatholil
