SIGN-SIGN RELATIONSHIPS

This is the thirty-second installment of a series of interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site, https://www.smashwords.com/books/byseries/13223

The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects.  As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.

This series continues with Gemini-Aquarius and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the zodiacal wheel factorially with a new zodiacal combination presented each month.  Past month’s articles are archived.  Upon completion, some 4 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will immediately be published as an e-book for sale.

GeminiAquarius

Gemini-Aquarius potentially resonates with the trine aspect between two planets.  Also, out-of-sign squares can exist between planets in very early Gemini and very late Aquarius and out-of-sign quincunxes can exist between planets in late Gemini and early Aquarius.  Thus, the Gemini-Aquarius relationship is generally harmonious but carrying some potential for conflict or crisis.   Interpreting the Gemini-Aquarius combination may also shed some light on a number of related symbol sets.  These include Gemini in the eleventh house, Aquarius in the third house, Mercury in Aquarius, Uranus in Gemini, Mercury in the eleventh house, Uranus in the third house, and aspects between Mercury and Uranus.

As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s.  When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person.  So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.”  Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.

With Gemini-Aquarius, we have the dynamic between Mutable Air and Fixed Air.  Signs of the same element are generally known as being compatible.  There is common ground that is shared between the containers in the two signs--common ground that exists in the mental and social spheres and which also involves communication.  The differences between Gemini and Aquarius center on their approaches to these spheres, as represented by their modalities.  These modalities are not necessarily in conflict, as they can support and inform each other, adding variety, depth and balance to the experience of the containers in the two signs.

Images for Gemini and Aquarius may include rapidly changing cloud patterns in a clear blue sky, or a wind-sprite moving here and there within the otherwise still air.  Images can also include an insistent and steady wind that sweeps away any lesser eddies of wind that may lie in its path, forcing the more fickle wind to conform to its stronger will.  Gemini adds interest and variety to the mental landscape shared by the Gemini and Aquarian containers.  Gemini can take Aquarius to new and different places and, of course, Aquarius can have a strong affinity and appreciation for the new and different.  You can lay out before your Aquarian partner a plethora of possibilities and experiences, a multiplicity of ideas and points of view, all at a fairly rapid pace.  This highlights Gemini's role in the mental sphere as a collector of information, an explorer of facts and of mental sensory input.

Aquarius provides context for all this Gemini gathering, just as an azure blue sky helps define the myriad shifting cloud shapes that run across it.  Through Aquarius' mental insight and inspiration, you are able to synthesize the collected input that your Gemini partner has provided, transforming it into a solid mental construct.  As Gemini's exploration reveals new facets of information to inform your ideas, this construct can become more detailed, more elaborate and richer.  With Gemini communicating new perspectives, new discoveries, the mental constructs that are the product of the Aquarian mind can change and develop.  Gemini's mutability and freshness are a powerful influence to keep the Saturnian element present within Aquarius (Saturn being the Classical ruler of Aquarius) from becoming overly dominant which can lead to a calcification of Aquarian mental constructs into rigid ideology or stubborn insistence that your ideas, and only your ideas, are right.

In the social sphere, Gemini's ability to quickly move within social circles touching a great many bases is a function of your approach to the social sphere being at an intensely personal level.  In fact, it is your many social interactions that are likely to be a prime generator of new ideas, perspectives, thoughts and information, which you then happily share with your Aquarian counterpart.  Not only the number of social interactions Gemini is likely to have but the relative randomness of those interactions enhances the opportunities for social interaction to result in these new and different experiences and mental products.

For Aquarius, the social sphere tends to be much more structured and group-oriented.  To the extent that Gemini can participate in multiple groups, without being committed or identified with any one of them, this is another way in which the Gemini-Aquarian experiences intersect and another avenue through which Gemini can enrich the experience of your Aquarian partner.  The Aquarian container, however, will generally want to relate social interaction to the group (whether this be a club, an identity group, or society) and, particularly, to what can benefit the group.  (Of course, because Aquarians tend to take their own identity from the group, they frequently, consciously or subconsciously, view themselves as benefiting when the group is benefited.)  Thus, there can be a tendency for the Aquarian container to want to harness Gemini's social energy to be in service to the group or some larger social structure.  While this can present challenges, depending on the degree to which the Gemini container exhibits a lack of commitment and insistence on personal freedom (i.e., randomness), the result can be complimentary.  The example of the organization's leader (Aquarius) employing the talents an active community organizer (Gemini) comes to mind.

Gemini and Aquarian containers are also likely to harmoniously communicate with one another.  As alluded to above, Gemini will often love to communicate their perspectives, thoughts and experiences to your Aquarian partner, who is likely to be eager to listen, as long as they find your messages to be meaningful, diverse and interesting.  The feedback that Gemini is likely to receive from Aquarius is often a structuring or restructuring of content that you are communicating.  Gemini may or may not appreciate these Aquarian insights but, if you do respond to them, the conversation will be enriched.  In fact, there is potential for "endless" conversation to be had between Aquarius and Gemini containers as Aquarius structures and places in context the thoughts and experiences of Gemini and the insights that the Aquarius container provides stimulates another round of Gemini communication about details, facts and perspectives.  Bear in mind that these conversations can take place internally, as conversations of the mind, as well as between two people.

The image of a strong wind sweeping away the lesser currents of air relates to differences in the modalities of the two signs.  Aquarians are noted for being strong willed when motivated by ideas, mental beliefs, concepts and ideologies.  Gemini, on the other hand, is generally viewed as having little allegiance to one thing or another, including to ideas, positions and causes.  Their frequent willingness to change positions or to hold multiple positions, depending upon circumstances, belies a general noncommitalness.  This contrasts with the Aquarian value of being committed, whether to an idea, a group or a cause.  This can become a source of conflict or crisis between containers in the two signs.

The mutable and fixed modalities of the two signs, brought together by the common air element can also contribute to better balance for each container.  When the Gemini and Aquarian containers act together, Gemini flexibility can balance out Aquarian rigidity and Aquarian commitment can shore up the Gemini container's will.  This may occur through a process of mutual infection or it may occur through a specialization of effort, with each container contributing its strength to balance the weakness of the other.

Looking at the two signs through their glyphs can bring further insight into how their energies can interact.  Gemini's glyph, the twins (Castor and Pollux) are most likely to be the recipients of the wisdom pouring from the Aquarian "water bearer."  Remember that, in the end, in an act of self-sacrifice by Pollux, the Twins were transformed and ascended into the heavens as a pair of stars.  This part of the myth speaks to the transcendent potential of Gemini, which is to rise above the level of the mind running after (the senses, pleasure, its own thoughts) and enter the timeless world of the Here and Now.  With regard to the Gemini-Aquarius dynamic, Aquarius must be seen in this context as a catalyst for Gemini transformation.  "Transformation," of course, may occur over a continuum and this Aquarius-Gemini dynamic may manifest in various forms of tutelage exercised by the Aquarian container with respect to their Gemini counterpart.  The influence of the Aquarian container can also result in various levels of consciousness raising of the Gemini container, often through the Aquarian container imparting sudden insight which the Gemini container may mentally grasp and incorporate.

The Gemini-Aquarian relationship is often symbiotic, as well.  For if a primary motivation of the Aquarian water bearer is to uplift, there must be a recipient upon which to act.  If the water of higher knowledge is just poured with no one to drink thereof, that largesse is just wasted.  To not be casting pearls before swine, Aquarius must have a willing and capable partner.  A receptive and curious Gemini container is an ideal vessel for Aquarius to fill.  Thus, the Gemini-Aquarius relationship in this context gives Aquarius meaning and purpose.

Looking at the ruling planets of each sign, Mercury and Uranus echo the dynamics suggested by the two signs' glyphs.  Uranus is often viewed as Mercury's higher octave.  Mercury symbolizes the personal, or lower mind, while Uranus symbolizes the transpersonal, or Higher Mind.  The Gemini-Aquarius relationship, in its natural trine aspect, suggests a partnership between the lower and Higher Mind.  This, of course, involves the Higher Mind (Uranus/Aquarius) leading the lower mind (Mercury/Gemini) for if the situation were to be reversed, it would be a perversion of the Cosmic Order).  This could occur under the relatively rare square Gemini-Aquarius relationships with the Gemini container resisting the pull and leadership of the Higher Mind.  If this were to occur, then we would see the suppressed and subconscious action of the transpersonal mind to shake loose the lower mind from its complacency.  The Aquarian container then would become a disrupter relative to the Gemini container, administering whatever shocks may be necessary to force the lower mind to lose confidence in its own ability to discern and control its reality.

Fortunately, the dominant relationship between Gemini and Aquarius is the harmonious trine.  We should recognize that the lower mind (Gemini) does have a contributing role to play.  It is not that it should become the Higher Mind, only that it should act in service to the purposes of the Higher Mind.  So, working together, the Gemini container will fulfill the tasks of gathering facts and information, applying a certain amount of logic, and communicating the joint intellectual product of the Gemini-Aquarius collaboration.  The insight, the guidance, and the overriding purpose of this collaboration will be Aquarius', however.

Of course, all of the Gemini-Aquarius dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people.  The Gemini-Aquarius energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s.  The depositorships of Mercury and Uranus may also come into play.
