SIGN-SIGN RELATIONSHIPS

This is the thirty-fourth installment of a series of sign-to-sign interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site, https://www.smashwords.com/books/byseries/13223

The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects.  As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.

This series continues with Cancer-Cancer and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the zodiacal wheel factorially with a new zodiacal combination presented each month.  Past month’s articles are archived.  Upon completion, some 4 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will immediately be published as an e-book for sale.

CancerCancer

Cancer-Cancer potentially resonates with the conjunction between two planets.  Thus, the Cancer-Cancer relationship is generally considered to be compatible but there are also opportunities for excesses to occur.   Interpreting the Cancer-Cancer combination may also shed some light on a number of related symbol sets.  These include Cancer in the fourth house, the Moon in Cancer and the Moon in the fourth house.

As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s.  When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person.  So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.”  Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.

With
Cancer-Cancer, we have the pairing of two Cardinal Water signs.  Thus, the relationship between these two containers is highly likely to be emotionally based.  There may be a strong emotional attraction, emotional bonding and.or emotional understanding.  The qualities associated with Cancer are also likely to be emphasized and intensified.  With both containers, and the relationship itself, functioning at the emotional level, there may be heightened mood swings and a heightened emotional atmosphere generally.  It may occur that the emotional state of one container influences or is transmitted to the other, or that containers react to the emotional state of the other.  This can result in a great deal of volatility, particularly if the emotional states of the containers are not in synch.  Also, if the Cancer containers are operating at different levels of emotional maturity or have other differences, this can produce emotionally tense friction.

One source of potential conflict between two Cancer containers is the reactivity characteristic of Cancer.  The Cancer energy tends to be receptive but when what is received is judged to be negative or threatening, there is a tendency on the part of a Cancer container to react protectively.  This may manifest as throwing up defenses or lashing out.  Passive aggressive behavior is also a common reaction.  When two Cancer containers are involved, it is not unusual for reaction in one to trigger reaction in the other.  This dynamic may be particularly symbolized by the image of two crabs (Cancer's glyph) fighting each other.

Internally (planets in a natal chart), this may sometimes produce conflicted emotional states or conflicted behavior.  If this occurs, the inner conflict may be projected outwardly, so that another becomes the substitute for one of the unresolved poles of conflict.  However, because a conflicted state exists internally and the native is likely to be shifting from one conflicted pole to another, the other upon whom conflict is projected can adopt no position that will satisfy the Cancer native.  The other can do nothing right.

Of course, Cancer is by no means always in reactive mode.  The protective quality associated with Cancer can also emanate from the urge to nurture.  Thus, a relationship between two Cancer containers may be dominated by feelings of caring, concern, and "mothering."  The mutual adoption of these feelings can make for a sweet and tender relationship.  The relationship between the two Cancer containers is also likely to be very supportive.  This supportiveness may be enhanced by a mutual intuitive atunement of the Cancer containers to each others' states and needs.  However, there is also a danger in this dynamic of co-dependency developing.  Cancer is known to be capable of great neediness and,
when neediness is pared with a desire to nurture and take care of another, the relationship can become unhealthy.

The presence of two Cancer containers can also magnify the emotional intuitiveness that may be characteristic of Cancer,  The Moon, Cancer's ruler, can symbolize a deep pull into the subconscious, which can then be a gateway to the
feminine Divine.  When both containers are attuned to this spiritual dimension of Cancer, they can help each other deepen their attraction to and union with the energy and intuition emerging out of the Cosmic Womb.  This pull toward our Cosmic Origin can be seen symbolically in another interpretation of the Cancer glyph as a stylized version of the Tao symbol (or 69).  This dynamic may also express itself in a calm acceptance of the state of Duality through the realization of the Oneness that ultimately underlies apparent duality.

Of course, all of the Cancer-Cancer dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people.  The Cancer-Cancer energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s.  The depositorship of the Moon may also come into play.  Gargatholil
