This is the fifth installment of a new series of interpretations of the astrological symbol set. For interpretations of Planets in Signs, Planets in Houses and Planets in Aspect, please see the Depth Astrology series at the Smashwords e-publishing site, https://www.smashwords.com/books/byseries/13223 .
The dynamics of sign-to-sign relationships can be useful not only in the interpretation of compatibility charts; they can also add information to the interpretation of planetary aspects. As with other symbol set interpretations, the juxtaposition of the essential energies of each sign is the starting off point for exploring their meanings.
This series continues with
Aries-Leo and will end with Pisces-Pisces, working around the
zodiacal wheel factorially with a
new zodiacal combination presented each month. Past month’s
articles are archived. Upon completion,
some 6 1/4 years from now, Insha’Allah, these articles will
immediately be published as an e-book for sale.
With Aries-Leo, we have
the first combination of same-element signs–Fire
with Fire. Because the elemental basis of the two
signs' qualities come from the same source, there tends to
be harmony and an innate understanding between containers in
these two signs. This harmonious relationship is
signaled by the natural trine that exists between the two
signs. It is further strengthened because the ruling
planets of the two signs, Mars and the Sun, are both natural
In Aries-Leo, we must also deal with integrating the Cardinal and Fixed modalities. This is the second occurrence of this dynamic, the firt being the Aries-Taurus combination. The interaction between the two modalities is markedly different here, however, due to the harmony produced by the underlying commonality of the Fire element. Still, there is potential for some conflict to exist, indicated by the sesqui-square potential existing between planets in the first half of Aries and the last half of Leo.
Interpreting the Aries-Leo combination may also shed some light on a number of related symbol sets. These include Aries in the fifth house, Leo in the first house, Mars in the fifth house, Mars in Leo, Sun in the first house, Sun in Aries and Mars-Sun aspects.
As a reminder, “container” is used here as a general term designating a planet whether in one’s own chart or another’s. When in another’s chart, “container” may practically be viewed to mean the other person. So that the analysis doesn’t wind up seeming too cold and depersonalized, I will sometimes use the personal pronoun (you) in lieu of the impersonal “container.” Recognize that either term can refer to a planetary energy within you or your relationship with another person.
With both Aries and Leo being Fire signs, they share propensities to act, to project outward, and to emote from the heart. Leo can be viewed as a more developed and more mature expression of these and other Fire sign qualities than Aries. In a way, Leo can be seen as Aries' older brother (or sister, though it is the "male" energy that predominates in both signs). This is not only a reflection of Leo's more advanced developmental stage (i.e., its association with the fifth house, as opposed to Aries' first house association) but of the nature of the Fixed modality compared with the Cardinal. Leo's fixity can be seen as representing a deepening or maturing of the Fire energy.
enthusiasm becomes Leonine passion. Aries'
unquestioning bravery and courage is transformed into
steadfast loyalty in Leo. Aries' naive
self-assertiveness becomes Leo's confident
self-expressivenes. Thus, the Aries container sees its
own fruition in Leo, while to the Leo container Aries
represents his/her own youthfulness. Thus, Aries has
the potential to continually refresh the Leo container.
When the Aries and Leo energies exist in this relationship of younger and elder, it is likely that the potential for harmony between the two signs will be actualized. As brothers-in-arms, adventurers together, either may take the lead. Leo may assert his/her natural leadership role, his/her authority to lead; or Aries may rush forward. But if Aries does so, it is likely to be under the watchful eye and protecting hand of Leo, at least if the harmony between the two signs is to be preserved. Aries-Leo may even form a kind of liege-master relationship with Leo providing protection and guidance while Aries provides Leo with loyalty and admiration. Remember that one of the primary qualities of the Fixed mode is security. To the yet untested and danger-prone Aries, Leo can offer the security of experience, as well as an unfailing loyalty, always being there to catch Aries in his/her stumbles.
A Leo may also enjoy showing his/her Aries co-adventurer the wonders that he/she has discovered (or performed). For Aries, Leo's experiences may be all new. Thus, Leo's need to display and call attention to his/her accomplishments may dovetail with Aries' need for new discoveries and striking off in new directions (shown to him/her by Leo). If it is all fresh territory for Aries, it may not matter that it is familiar ground to Leo. Especially if the adventure is "doing" rather than "telling," the sharing of experience can be satisfying to both. And if Leo allows Aries to lead the way, pointing and guiding from behind, Aries is likely to be thrilled and Leo is apt to be satisfied in his/her "general's" role.
There is also an emotional
dimension to the Aries-Leo bond. As mentioned
previously, the Fire element is associated with emotion from
the heart. This is an active and largely positive
emotional field. Enthusiasm; ardent passion; bravery,
courage and daring; and intense desire are all forms of
emotion that can be shared and appreciated in each other by
the two Fire signs–perhaps
more simply, purely and naively in Aries. Anger, jealousy
and adrenalin-pumping fear are the more negative expressions of
this heart-emotion and they can easily be shared and understood
by these two Fire signs. For this reason, these emotions
may not have such a lasting negative effect as when they are
experiencd by Water, Earth or even Air signs.
Of course, all this can
get out of hand. The other side of the trine's free
flowing harmony is that sometimes energies flow too freely
and negativities are allowed to pass between containers in
the absence of discrimination. One danger is that
Aries-Leo can develop into a sychophant-vanity driven
relationship. Aries may become too much the ardent
admirer of Leo and a type of co-depencency may
develop. This type of relationship is filled with
potential for abuse. Leo may use Aries to fight
his/her battles and may keep Aries in a subservient position
by throwing his/her power and authority around. An
insecure Aries may even continue to foolishly get
him/herself into situations from which he/she needs to be
rescued by Leo in order to reassure him/herself that the
bond (or bondage) of loyalty remains between them.
Emotions may also flow
with too little regulation between the Aries and Leo
containers. Thus, anger feeds anger, pride leads to
foolishness and hubris, and daring leads to
out-daring. Too much Fire creates conflagration
followed by burn-out and exhaustion.
dimension of the Aries-Leo relationship lies in the
progressive development symbolized in the first house-fifth
house connection. Instead of the focus of that
connection being the satisfaction of the ego, it is the
development or the discovery of the Self. For Aries,
the task is to discover and actualize the primal or naked
Self. For Leo, it is to discover and actualize the
creative Self. Leo show Aries the actualized potential
inherent in the primal Self–the
promise of who I can become, of how Being can manifest
It/Him/Herself. This gazing in wonder then can provide
Aries with the impetus for courageously undertaking the work
of Being the Self. For Leo, Aries' essential purity is
a reminder to him/her of his/her own inner core, which is
the Source of his/her creativity. Aries reminds Leo
that it is not the creations but the Creative Power of the
Self that is Real. Thus, Leo leads Aries forward
toward the actualization of his/her Real Self while Aries
leads Leo back to the Pure Well-spring of his/her Real Self.
As with the Aries-Taurus semi-square, the primary conflict symbolized by the Aries-Leo sesqui-square is between the Cardinal and the Fixed modalities. Often, this conflict involves the desire to lead inherent in both signs. For Aries, this desire is not so much to have followers as it is for Leo, but to blaze off into uncharted territory. If the Aries and Leo energies are not developed sufficiently or if they are insecure, each will egoistically try to assert his/her right to lead. When Aries rushes forward, Leo's reaction may be to stand firm in his/her authority and right to be the leader and to try to block Aries' path or pull him/her back into the orb of Leo's power. If confronted by Leo's fixed determination to draw boundaries and keep Aries' within Leo's realm, the Aries Ram is likely to react by charging ahead, oblivious to the fact that a Lion stands in his/her way commanding him/her to follow. The more Leo roars to assert his/her authority, the more Aries may be determined to break those bonds and strike out alone. Leo's reaction may be anger, annoyance at Aries' foolishness and naivetee, or parental concern and a determination to protect Aries from him/herself.
Especially if Aries proves to be uncontrollable, Leo may become dismissive of Aries as a defense mechanism in order to protect the integrity of his/her claimed authority. The attitude of Leo towards Aries may be one of "Oh, foolish child." Aries, perceiving Leo's studied indifference or patronizing attitude, is then apt to "act out" even more assertively as if to say, "I am not a child. You must take me seriously. I am not under your authority." Eventually, this behavior by Aries is only likely to provoke Leo's wrath.
Resolving the conflict will usually require that both parties develop respect for each others' needs and proper roles. Leo will need to recognize that it is necessary for Aries' development that he/she take risks and learn from his/her own experiences. Leo needs to validate rather than disrespect Aries' strong need to strike out on his/her own. Aries may need to learn not to react when his/her Leo counterpart goes into protective mode and realize that the Leo container has only his/her best interests at heart. (This, as with other Aries-Leo dynamics, can play out internally, as well as between two people.) Aries may also need to learn to accept and value the experience that Leo embodies.
Of course, all of the Aries-Leo dynamics can play out internally, as well as between two people. The Aries-Leo energy will also be modulated by the planets involved, whether in your own chart or someone else’s. The depositorships of Mars and the Sun may also come into play. -- Gargatholil
Although I consider the natal chart to be dominant factor in the synchronicity that is the human psyche experiences with the astrological symbol set, I recognize that transits do play a role and are part of the synchronicity of life’s experience. That said, I do not make too much of transits. While they can indicate the “astrological weather” you may be experiencing, I do not put much stock in them as predictors of events.
There are a number of reasons for my position. One is my belief in the astrological symbols set as indicating potentialities based upon the essential meanings of the symbols. At the level of events on the physical plane, these potentialities are legion. Uranus square Venus can just as easily indicate coming to terms with your need to individuate in order to bring your relationship to the next level as it can indicate divorce and there are a thousand possibilities in between.
Another huge reason is my belief in the futility and uselessness of predicting the future. Christ said, “Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered” and the Qur’an states, “Not a leaf falls but with His knowledge; there is not a grain in the depths of the earth nor anything green or withered but is inscribed in a record clear for those who can read.” Yes, the future can be known (although not with certainty) but when we are all subject to our fate, which no one can change, what good does it do?
With that said, there was much excitement about the recent Grand Cross pattern in the skies, which has now passed; but the Uranus-Pluto square remains. In fact, Uranus and Pluto have been squaring each other in and out of orb since 2009 and pretty consistently since 2011. Exact squares occurred in June and September 2012, May and November 2013, and April 2014. The square will continue, mostly in separation, through 2017. If you have planets in late Pisces through mid-Aries or early to mid-Capricorn, you may have felt this (as well as some with planets in late Virgo to mid-Libra or early to mid-Cancer). If you have planets from mid-Aries to late Aries or mid-Capricorn (as well as mid- to late Libra and mid-Cancer), you may continue to feel this.
Despite the obvious political symbolism of freedom in conflict with power, I am not in the camp that sees this square as having any effect on world politics. Frankly, the world is always full of upheaval somewhere and the conflict between freedom and power is age old. That said, times may indeed seem more turbulent (the last Uranus-Pluto square was during the Great Depression) and this energy can sow the seeds of future experience of turbulence and conflict for those born with the square.
If you have planets in Aries, you may or may have experienced a certain amount of turmoil prompted by sudden changes or radical shifts. The ultimate purpose of these disruptions is to bring you to the next level of individuation. The progression of Aries is to move from the naïve, innocent experience of self to the spiritually mature realization of Self. Along the way, it is easy to get stuck at various levels of ego. With ego, there is always attachment. Although you may think you are independent and free, as long as your independence and sense of freedom is dependent on you having your own way, this is an illusion. For, as long as you are attached to outcomes, you are dependent. As the Sufi, Ibn al-`Arabi would say, you are nothing but a contingent being. Uranus’ role is to shake up those attachments, by violent earthquake if necessary. Only by losing your attachments can you be truly free and truly individuated.
The Pluto square can add another layer of turmoil to your life, one that is the result of the utter destruction your attachments. This may be conflict and turmoil that is compounding the turmoil you are feeling as a result of the Aries transit or it may occur in an area of life represented by the house in which Pluto resides. You may also feel as if something much more powerful than you is standing in your way, imprisoning you or even trying to destroy your freedom.
If you have planets in Capricorn that have or are being transited by Pluto, you may feel that what you have worked so hard to build up and had thought was permanent and secure is being destroyed. It may feel as if your world is being ripped out from underneath you and that you are falling into a deep abyss. You may feel as if you are losing control over everything for which you have worked so hard. All your attempts to regain control may only be met with more disruption, opposition and destruction.
At the same time, you may be experiencing sudden and unforeseen changes in the area of life symbolized by the house through which Uranus is traveling in your chart. You may experience separations, whether this is an urge to separate that you are feeling or involuntary. You may also feel an urge to escape or be free, particularly from the situation you are experiencing as a result of the Pluto transit.
You are likely to experience tensions and conflict that involve control issues, separation and freedom. The Uranian energy may be pushing your Aries function to be free while the Plutonian energy may be holding on to what is being pulverized and collapsing all around you. If you remain in the conflict of the square, trying to assert your freedom, on the one hand and trying to control everything and everyone around you (or just trying to gain some control over your situation), you are likely to find that you can obtain neither and that you remain powerless against the forces that are grinding you down, pushed and buffeted by changes in your life and bound to your attachments.
The key to true liberation and to regaining
power and control is surrender. Surrender to
life’s inevitabilities, to your karmic destiny, to the
necessity of detachment, will allow you to accept all that
is going on in your life.
By surrendering, by admitting defeat, you stop
struggling against what you cannot change, against that over
which you have no control.
This allows you to go deeper and higher, to a place
where you can merge and feel at One with that Power that
will do with you what It will regardless of your ego’s
desires. -- Gargatholil
